Following a comprehensive national review of children’s heart services four options have been proposed to reduce the number of hospitals providing children’s heart surgery from 11 to six or seven to improve results for children.
The Freeman Hospital part of the Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals in Newcastle is one of the 11 centres currently providing children’s heart surgery and is included in three of the four options.
All four options have now been put forward for public consultation and the NHS wants to hear people’s views before making a decision. The four-month consultation began on March 1 this year and will end on July 1.
